Why activity books are about so much more than keeping children busy

When most people think of an activity book, they probably picture something that keeps children occupied for half an hour while the adults catch up on a few jobs. They're often seen as a way to pass the time on a rainy afternoon or to stop the inevitable chorus of "I'm bored!" during the summer holidays.
There's nothing wrong with that, of course. Keeping children entertained is valuable in itself.
But the very best activity books do something much more important.
They create little moments of achievement.
Every time a child solves a maze, spots every hidden object, finishes a word search or finally works out the answer to a tricky puzzle, they're experiencing something incredibly powerful. They're thinking, "I did it." Those small successes might seem insignificant to us as adults, but for children they're the building blocks of confidence.
Confidence isn't usually created through one huge achievement. More often, it's built through dozens of tiny victories that quietly add up over time.
That's one of the reasons puzzles have stood the test of time. Long before tablets and smartphones existed, children were happily sitting with puzzle books because they offer something our brains naturally enjoy: the satisfaction of figuring something out. Whether it's recognising patterns, spotting differences, following clues or solving a problem, every activity encourages children to think just a little differently.
The wonderful thing is that none of it feels like learning.
While adults might see problem-solving, concentration, visual perception and critical thinking, children simply see a fun challenge they want to complete. That's exactly how learning should feel.
It's also why activity books can play such an important role during the summer holidays. Teachers often talk about the "summer slide" - the idea that children can lose some of the knowledge, routines and confidence they've built during the school year. The answer isn't to replace school with more schoolwork. Children deserve a proper break. But keeping their minds curious through games, puzzles, drawing, reading and creative activities can help them stay engaged without ever feeling as though they're sitting in a classroom.
That idea was at the heart of our Summer of Fun Activity Book.

We didn't want to create pages that children had to complete. We wanted to create a book they would want to come back to. One that could be picked up in the garden, packed into a suitcase, taken on a long car journey, opened while waiting for food in a café or enjoyed on a rainy afternoon at home. A book that fits around family life, rather than demanding time from it.
With more than 70 puzzles, games, crafts, recipes, colouring activities and outdoor challenges, every page offers another opportunity to think, create, laugh or discover something new. Some activities encourage children to move, others invite them to slow down and concentrate, and plenty are simply there because they're fun.
Perhaps that's the real value of an activity book. It's not about filling time; it's about making the most of it.
Because when summer comes to an end, children probably won't remember every puzzle they completed or every colouring page they finished. What they'll remember is making frozen banana pops with their family, laughing at a silly joke, searching for hidden objects together on holiday or proudly showing someone the picture they learned to draw.
Those are the little wins.
And when you put enough little wins together, you create something much bigger - a summer filled with confidence, curiosity, laughter and memories.
That's the kind of summer we wanted to help create.
