How to beat the Summer Slide without it ever feeling like school.
Every summer, millions of children enjoy six well-earned weeks away from school.
They deserve it.
The holidays are made for adventures, muddy walks, family days out, slower mornings and making memories that last far longer than six weeks.
But while the school gates close, something fascinating begins to happen inside the brain.
Researchers have spent decades studying what's known as the Summer Slide (sometimes called the Summer Learning Gap) - the gradual loss of some academic knowledge and learning habits during the long summer break. Some studies suggest children can lose up to a month of learning over the summer, particularly in reading and maths, simply because those skills aren't being used as often.
That might sound worrying.
But here's the good news.
It doesn't mean children need homework.
It doesn't mean they need hours of worksheets around the kitchen table.
In fact, we'd argue the opposite.
The Brain Is Like a Muscle
If you've ever taken six weeks away from the gym, you'll know that first workout back always feels harder.
Not because your muscles have disappeared - but because they haven't been challenged. Our brains work in a remarkably similar way.
Every puzzle solved, every story read, every question asked, every recipe followed and every creative challenge strengthens the pathways inside the brain. Scientists call this neuroplasticity—the brain's incredible ability to grow and strengthen through experience.
The more we use those pathways, the stronger they become. The less we use them, the more time they need to reconnect. That's why the summer holidays matter so much. Not because children need to keep doing schoolwork, but because their brains still need opportunities to think, create, move, question and explore.
The wonderful thing is that children don't need to realise they're learning for this to happen.
That's Why We Created The Wonder Wall

At The Wonder Company, we don't think summer should be about stopping children from forgetting things.
We think it should be about helping them discover even more. That's why we created the idea of The Wonder Wall. Imagine every child starts the summer with a blank wall.
Over the next six weeks they gradually fill it with pictures.
A butterfly they've never noticed before.
A recipe they cooked themselves.
A puzzle they finally solved.
A conversation that made them laugh.
A new country they learnt about.
A den they built.
A challenge they didn't think they could complete.
Every experience.
Every discovery.
Every question.
Every achievement.
Adds another picture to their Wonder Wall.
By September, they haven't simply avoided the Summer Slide.
They've spent six weeks building curiosity, confidence, creativity and resilience—qualities that support learning long after the holidays are over.
10 Ways to Fill Your Wonder Wall This Summer
The best part?
Most of these don't feel educational at all.
Read something unexpected
Books are brilliant, but so are comics, recipes, football programmes, magazines, maps and activity books. Different types of reading build vocabulary, comprehension and confidence without children even noticing.
Cook together
Cooking is one of the best hidden learning activities there is. Children practise measuring, sequencing, following instructions, problem-solving and patience - all while making something delicious.
Make something
Painting, junk modelling, LEGO, crafts, gardening or building a den all encourage imagination, planning and creative thinking.
Explore somewhere new
Visit a woodland, try a different walking route, explore a museum or become a tourist in your own town. New experiences encourage children to observe, question and discover.
Solve a challenge
Mazes, riddles, treasure hunts, board games, word searches and activity books all strengthen concentration, perseverance and critical thinking.
Ask brilliant questions
Swap "What did you do today?" for "What surprised you today?" or "What's the most interesting thing you've discovered this week?" Great questions create curious minds.
Move every day
Exercise isn't just good for growing bodies. It also supports concentration, memory, emotional wellbeing and learning. Whether it's a bike ride, obstacle course or game of frisbee, it all counts.
Learn one new thing
Choose a topic together and see where your curiosity leads. Space, sharks, volcanoes, insects, castles or the human body - children remember the things they become fascinated by.
Do something kind
Helping others builds empathy, confidence and emotional intelligence. Bake for a neighbour, write a thank-you card or simply help someone without being asked.
Hide the learning
Some of the very best learning happens when children don't realise they're doing it. That's why puzzles, games, creative packs and activity books are so powerful - they quietly encourage reading, problem-solving, creativity and critical thinking while simply feeling like fun.
Why We Create Wonder
People often ask why we create activity books, creative packs and screen-free resources.
The answer is surprisingly simple.
Because children don't wake up during the summer asking for maths worksheets.
They wake up wanting adventures.
They want to build things, create things, laugh, explore, cook, solve mysteries, play games and discover something new.
We realised years ago that if we could hide learning inside those experiences, children would keep growing without it ever feeling like school.
That's the thinking behind everything we create.
Whether it's exploring healthy eating through Food Explorer Quest, building confidence with Wonder, Calm & Create, discovering new cultures in Around the World, supporting teenagers through Active, Healthy, Happy, or getting hands-on with one of our activity packs, every resource is designed to spark curiosity and encourage meaningful moments.
Every page.
Every puzzle.
Every craft.
Every movement challenge.
Every conversation.
Every discovery.

Because when September arrives, children won't just return with happy memories.
They'll return with six weeks' worth of curiosity.
Confidence.
Creativity.
