Week 9 - Platable Pencil

It was fantastic news to hear that HAF has been renewed for another three years.

It’s a programme that continues to thrive — supporting more children, more families, and creating lasting impact in communities.

And just like HAF, our plantable pencils have been growing too.

From Pencil to Plant — The Story

When we first gave out our plantable pencils, they seemed like a fun little extra for children to take home.

But what happened next surprised even us!

• Week 1: A pencil, planted in soil on a windowsill.

• Week 3: A tiny green shoot appeared — fragile but full of promise :)

• Week 5: The first leaves stretched upwards, clearly very determined.

• Week 7: Taller, stronger, supported with a simple stake.

• Week 9: A thriving plant, leafy and full of life — all from something so small.

In just two months, the pencil transformed into a thriving plant. A powerful reminder that with the right environment, care, and encouragement, growth always finds a way.

From Plant to Plate

But this isn’t just any plant.

The pencil grows into a cherry tomato plant — which means children can harvest real tomatoes from something they once used in the classroom.

That journey — from pencil case to dinner plate — opens the door to so much more:

• Learning where food really comes from

• Making connections to healthy eating and choices

• Starting conversations at home about cooking, nutrition, and sharing food together

It’s not just about growing plants. It’s about growing awareness, sparking curiosity, and encouraging habits that support wellbeing.
