Empowering Teens Through the Holiday Activities and Food Programme

Writer: The Wonder Company TeamThe Wonder Company Team

The school holidays can be a challenging time for many families, especially those whose children rely on free school meals during term time.

Recognising this, the government's Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme (which has just been renewed for another year!) provides support to ensure that children not only receive nutritious meals but also engage in enriching activities during the holidays.

As part of this initiative, The Wonder Company has developed a comprehensive resource to further support councils, schools, and holiday clubs in promoting healthy living among teenagers.

Addressing the Challenges Teenagers Face

Adolescence is a pivotal time for establishing lifelong healthy habits. However, teenagers today encounter numerous obstacles, including:

  • Nutritional Gaps: With the absence of school-provided meals during holidays, some teens may lack access to balanced nutrition.

  • Physical Inactivity: Limited opportunities for structured physical activities can lead to sedentary lifestyles.

  • Social Isolation: Without school routines, some teenagers may experience feelings of isolation or boredom.

John Williams, a council lead involved in the HAF Programme, emphasises, "The resources provided through this initiative are instrumental in bridging the gap during school holidays, ensuring our young people remain active, engaged, and well-nourished."

Introducing The Wonder Company's Resource

Developed specifically for the HAF Programme, The Wonder Company's resource offers:

  • Engaging Activities: A variety of exercises and games designed to keep teenagers physically active and entertained.

  • Nutritional Guidance: Simple, budget-friendly recipes and tips to encourage healthy eating habits.

  • Well-being Support: Mindfulness exercises and mental health resources to promote overall well-being.

Hazel, MD for The Wonder Company, notes, "Our goal was to create something that resonates with teenagers, providing them with practical tools and knowledge to make healthier choices during the holidays."

Real Impact: A Teen's Perspective

Sophie, a 15-year-old participant in a recent holiday club, shares her experience: "The activities were fun and helped me learn new ways to stay healthy. I especially enjoyed trying out the recipes with my friends."

Join Us in Making a Difference

We invite councils, schools, and holiday clubs to utilise this resource as part of their HAF Programme offerings.

Together, we can ensure that teenagers have the support and opportunities they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives during the school holidays and beyond.
